Magnetic Scrolls adventures for Windows CE HPCs

Welcome, weary traveller

Magnetic Scrolls on Windows CE HPCs

You find yourself in what appears to be a construction site. Pieces of dangerous HTML lurk to your left and right, waiting to trip up the unwary. Not that you fall into that category, oh no.
>xyzzy
Nothing happens. Really.
>help
You are on a restoration of a website from 2004 known as the Chiark hub. The author is attempting to inject a sense of humour into your experience by pretending you’re playing interactive fiction. He isn’t succeeding. You wish that they’d give in the lame attempts and just get to the point. So he will. If you ask
>get to the point
Right. Yes. *clears throat* For your delectation, I am (semi) proud to present the Windows CE port of Magnetic, known as MagnetiCE. It allows you to play Magnetic Scrolls games on your handheld PC. It’s currently a “public beta”, and may even get finished if people tell me that they use it.
Download the interpreter from this site. Games can be found at the Memorial, linked above. Please do drop me an email if you use this, as it would give me the kick I need to finish it off. Please see the included help file for known limitations and bugs.

Filename Purpose
MagnetiCE.exe Install package for activesync – all processors (ARM, MIPS, SH3, SH4), WinCE 2.11 or greater. If you have a PC with activesync, this is all you need.
magnetice.arm.cab Arm CAB file for direct installation on HPC- HP Jornada 710, 720 etc
magnetice.mips.cab MIPS CAB file for direct installation on HPC- NEC MobilePro etc
magnetice.sh3.cab SH3 CAB file for direct installation on HPC- HP Jornada 680, 690 etc
magnetice.sh4.cab SH4 CAB file for direct installation on HPC- Compaq Aero etc

Magnetice, and magnetic, is released under the GPL.
Source code is messy at the moment, but as this is GPL’d I release it in all its, er, ‘glory’

Sorry Pablo, my fault! The test server has non-case sensitive filing system, this one is case sensitive.

    Fixed that for you!

Many, many thanks a jewel I will try it!

Did you tried it? I tried few years ago version 2.2 and there was a memoryleak causing that after some number of steps the application run out of memory. It was impossible to finish any game.

Ah, that’s you Nick. Thanks for releasing the source.

If somebody has an MS WinCE development environment and takes a look at this, here is my old message:
“I think I hit today a memory leak in magnetice. I am not 100% sure how to reproduce it, but it seems like this: Playing pawn game, drag
the picture most out of the screen, walk whatever direction, drag picture out of screen, walk whatever direction. After a while of
walking WinCE gets out of memory and picture does not display at all. This is arm version for J720. It seems to me, as the leak
depends on the size of the picture that is off the screen.”

Sounds like I’m not freeing the temporary bitmaps or something similar. I’ll have a look. I’ve still got a WinCE development environment on my Libretto 110CT!

Hi Covex Ive try it in Jornada 680 (SH3), may be you are right, the picture looks over the text I dont know if get out of memory already.

  8. covex says:

I tried to setup development environment however at the end of the day with various troubles I ended up failing to connect to a real device. I can debug only in emulator of HPC Pro as there is not HPC2000 emulator in its SDK.
