{"id":236,"date":"2018-03-01T19:28:23","date_gmt":"2018-03-01T19:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.binarydevotion.com\/?p=236"},"modified":"2018-03-15T09:21:42","modified_gmt":"2018-03-15T09:21:42","slug":"modelling-the-amiga-amiga-1000-front-flap-for-modification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.binarydevotion.com\/?p=236","title":{"rendered":"Modelling the Amiga: Amiga 1000 front flap for modification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After being tempted for years to tinker with a 3D printer, I took the plunge last Autum.\u00c2\u00a0 But what am I doing with it?\u00c2\u00a0 Printing all those bits that you need, but can&#8217;t find&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Part 1: the front cover for the Amiga 1000.\u00c2\u00a0 Quite a few 1000s seem to be missing this part as they are wont to fall off in storage, or whilst being transported, or wherever.<\/p>\n<p>I have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.binarydevotion.com\/?p=9\">GBA 1000<\/a> which adds (amongst other things) an IDE interface. on which I use a CF card with an IDE adapter.\u00c2\u00a0 I also have a Gotek floppy drive emulator, which has a small display and needs a USB slot, and a couple of buttons&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 I have been tempted more than once to make modifications to the front cover, such as cutting a slot for the CF.<\/p>\n<p>But cutting 30 year old irreplaceable stuff is not something I want to do.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_237\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.binarydevotion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/bda1k.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-237\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-237\" src=\"http:\/\/www.binarydevotion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/bda1k-300x188.png\" alt=\"A1K RAM Cover\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.binarydevotion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/bda1k-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/www.binarydevotion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/bda1k-768x481.png 768w, https:\/\/www.binarydevotion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/bda1k-1024x642.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.binarydevotion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/bda1k.png 1206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-237\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A1K RAM Cover<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And hence, I&#8217;ve spent an evening with calipers, ruler, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openscad.org\/\">OpenSCAD<\/a> to model a replacement.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 OpenSCAD is an interesting modelling tool, as rather than WYSIWYG editing, you define your model using Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) primitives &#8211; and CSG was the subject of my final year degree project.<\/p>\n<p>So rather than defining polygons, you define a cube, subtract another cube, union with another cube, rotate, translate, iterate&#8230; just in text.<\/p>\n<p>The result can be seen here.<\/p>\n<p>I will release the OpenSCAD file eventually, however for now I am making the STL available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:2811303\">Thingiverse<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 &#8211;
